5 Tips to Extend Your Battery Life

Nothing can mess up your day like a battery dying on you at a crucial time. After all, if you are like most people, then you rely a lot on your electronic devices. Here are a few tips to make sure your favorite gadget always has some juice to spare:

1. Start fresh. Always make sure you have a fresh set of batteries loaded in your device. Nothing beats the assurance of having a full load of power from the get go. This also ensures that your power gauge reflects an accurate indication of the real status of your battery. Used batteries tend to reflect a full load after they have rested a bit, but they actually have less charge left in them.

2. Stop fiddling. Fiddling with your device to change settings or preview your shots or "test" if you still have juice left actually can harm your battery longevity as some devices actually draw a lot of power when starting up. Getting fiddly with your settings just eats up power unnecessarily.

3. Turn your device off when not in use. If you are not going to be using your device for a duration of time, shut it off completely. This is especially true with devices that interact with other devices or have built in radios that can continually put out a signal—and subsequently use up a lot of your battery even on standby.

4. Take advantage of power management. Most devices today have very robust power management systems built into them. They can set up your device to automatically go to sleep or shut down when not in use to save oodles of power. Use them to your advantage.

5. Use a battery life extender. There are accessories or devices available that can increase the life of your battery. They come in many forms. There are even solutions that can simply pop onto a standard disposable battery and introduce an optimizing circuit that makes the most of all the charge available in your cell. This type of battery life extender is an elegant solution that is both economical and as simple to use as just popping a sleeve over your battery.
